Panel 71 - Australian Politics / Media & Politics: Alliance politics - Panel on the politics of security in Australia
Date: Wednesday, 28 September 2016
Time: 9.00 am – 10.30 am
Location: Mathews 306
Chair: Prof Mark Beeson, University of Western Australia
The ANZUS alliance remains the bedrock of Australian security. It enjoys remarkably high levels of popular support as well the backing of both the ALP and the Coalition. This panel looks at the political context in which the alliance operates and considers what impact this has on the strategic choices that are made - or not made - as a consequence. The panel is not about the relative merits of various weapons systems, but about the political, ideological and social context in which major decisions about strategic policy and defense planning are actually made. This issue is of particular consequence given Australia's potential difficulty reconciling its relationship with the United States and China at a time of growing strategic tension.
