Do wild animals have a right to water?

Stream: Panel 40 - Environmental Politics: From Rivers to the Sea: Local Perspectives on Resources, Environment and Justice in Eastern Australia
Date: Tuesday, 27 September 2016
Time: 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm
Speaker(s): John Hadley

In this presentation I broaden the traditional focus of animal rights beyond basic rights to life and bodily integrity to rights of access to water. First, I explore the logical coherence and practical implications of giving wild animals rights to water. Secondly, drawing upon the concept of guardianship for cognitively impaired human beings, I suggest a new habitat protection mechanism that could promote the ‘water interests’ of wild animals and, in the process, help to achieve mainstream conservation objectives.
