In this presentation I broaden the traditional focus of animal rights beyond basic rights to life and bodily integrity to rights of access to water. First, I explore the logical coherence and practical implications of giving wild animals rights to water. Secondly, drawing upon the concept of guardianship for cognitively impaired human beings, I suggest a new habitat protection mechanism that could promote the ‘water interests’ of wild animals and, in the process, help to achieve mainstream conservation objectives.
